Zero is an interesting figure. It is actually defined as a quantity or number or a figure without a quantity or number, yet zeroes are really important. You cannot have a million dollars without a lot of zeroes or a billion dollars without even more zeroes. Generally speaking, zeroes don’t play a big part in our lives unless we stop and look at it more closely. Usually, zeroes are a bad thing.
Think about all the things that would be painful if you had zeroes. If you look at the profits of your business for the last month, or what you got on your last Algebra test — not a good thing. If you get your bank statement and look at it and find out the balance is zero, yep, that’s bad news.
On the other hand, zero is a really good thing. How so? Well, the doctor’s report came back after your tests had been run and they found zero cancer cells in your body. Zero is good. If you thought about the traffic tickets you’ve gotten over the last five years and it was zero, that’s a good thing. You could stop and think about a whole list of things in your life that had not happened and zero is good time and time again. For instance, heart attacks. Zero. Root canals. Zero. Flat tires. Zero. Hurricanes, house fires, headaches, car wrecks. Zero. Count your blessings. Zero is a good thing.
While zero can be bad and it can be blessed, it’s interesting to look in the Bible and realize that there are no zeroes. Well, not the number at least or the lack of a number. About as close as we get to having a zero listed in the Bible is in the book of Joshua 19:35 where a town that was named Zer is in the new land that is being occupied. We almost got there with Zer, but that is not zero.
A closer look at the Bible would reveal that there are some wonderful things in Scripture that you and I can celebrate that are zero in nature. Pause for a devotional moment in your day and think about each one of these things.
One — the sum total of all the people on the planet for all times that God does not love … ZERO! Indeed, for God so loved the entire world, the entire world of every stripe and color and background, He loves them. We are a part of that group. He loves everyone and no one is outside the realm of His love for us.
Two — the sum total of lies that God has ever told to us … ZERO! In fact, the Bible states it this way, “Which God, that cannot lie, promised” (Titus 1:2). You can believe Him. When the sun is shining, you can believe Him. When the clouds come in, you can believe Him. Whatever is going on in your life, you can believe Him. He has not and He will not lie to you. We may not be forthcoming and honest with Him or even with ourselves, but He does not lie. Praise God!
Three — the number of people who will go to heaven without trusting Jesus … ZERO! Jesus died for all people everywhere, but God has provided for us a free will decision-making process in which each one of us can either receive or reject Christ. Eternity is decided by your decision for or against Christ Jesus.
Four — the sum total number of people who Jesus refuses to save … ZERO! In fact, Jesus said it Himself, “And him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37). Under no conditions will He push aside or reject. In Jesus’ dying moments, there were men at arm’s length on either side of Him. One man trusted Jesus, reached out to Him and Jesus told him, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). The other man lived in his rejection and rebellion and died the way he had lived. Jesus reaches out to us and maybe right now to you. He stands at your heart’s door and wants to come in. He is not refusing you. You will have to refuse Him.
Five — the number of sins that God will not forgive … ZERO! Search the Scriptures and you will find that God saved murderers, drunkards, adulterers, thieves, criminals of every stripe and description. He will forgive you of your sins. My prayer for you today is that you will reach out to Him as He reaches out to you, and you will not be a zero but one more whose name will be written down in the Lamb’s Book of Life – and a zero in your case who will not spend eternity separated from God.
