The ‘Whosoever Will’ of Easter

In just a few days the Christian community encircling the globe will be celebrating the death of Jesus on the cross and His triumphant, glorious resurrection three days later.  It is the pinnacle picture of God’s good news to us.  It is the heart of the Gospel as Jesus gave His life for us and then overcame death and all that would overcome us because of our sins.  But for whom is this good news proclaimed?  There’s no better word found in Scripture than at the close of the book in Revelation 22:17, for the word is “whosoever.”  That verse proclaims, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”  For whom did Jesus die and who can come to the cross and be saved?  Well, according to Scripture, “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2).  He died for all.  He died for you and me.  He died for the sins of the world, and so as we approach this Easter, everybody you see, everybody you know, ever have known, ever will know is one of the whosoever will may come folks.

I got to thinking about the whosoever wills and was overwhelmed in trying to see how big as I thought about all of the people who would fit into the whosoever will plan of God to save.  Take just a few moments at this Easter preparation time and walk through the alphabet of the whosoever wills:

Affluent, Alienated, Aching

Burdened, Broken, Bruised, Boastful

Contaminated, Condemned, Contentious, Conscientious

Desperate, Discouraged, Disengaged, Druggie, Drunkard

Excluded, Expelled, Extravagant, Extrovert

Fun-loving, Frustrated, Failure, Forgotten

Goober, Glamour Queen, Gardner

Hobo, Housewife, Honor Student, Hungry, Hulk, Helpless

Introverted, Intellect, Inquiring

Junkie, Jilted, Jerk

Klumsy, Krude, Kantakerous, Konflicted

Lover, Loser, Looney

Majestic, Marred, Mourning, Married

Noteworthy, Ne’er-do-well, Nutty, Neglected

Overrated, Overextended, Overlooked, Overbearing

Pretender, Perverted, Pompous

Questioning, Quotable, Quiet

Rouge, Rowdy, Regal, Runt

Searching, Struggling, Snubbed, Soured

Troubled, Trampled, Torn, Touched

Unappreciated, Unqualified, Underrated

Vicious, Vulnerable, Vagabond

Wicked, Winsome, Wounded, Wandering

X-troverted, X-plosive, X-cluded

Young, Yearning, Yokels, Yahoos

Zoned In, Zoned Out, Zero

All of these are whosoever wills and somewhere in this list you might jot your name alongside and realize that when Jesus died on the cross and paid for the sins of the world, He paid for yours and it was Him who said in John 6:37, “And him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”  He is not going to reject you.  This Easter will be the greatest you ever spent if even this very day you will say, “Lord Jesus, come into my heart today.  Forgive me of all my sins.  Give me life everlasting.  I trust you and I welcome you as my Lord and Savior.  Amen.”
