2004 Disaster Responses

Disaster Relief logoMarch 12, 2004 — the Mississippi Baptist Disaster Relief Feeding Unit was activated to Lamar Baptist Association to assist Greenville Baptist Church with feeding following the break of Big Bay Lake Dam. Approximately 600 meals were prepared by eight volunteers from March 12-15, 2004.

Disaster Relief Feeding Unit photoAugust 14, 2004 — The Feeding Unit was activated to Arcadia, Florida after Hurricane Charley. The Mississippi Team was joined by Disaster Relief volunteers from the Alabama Baptist Convention as part of the response. The Feeding Unit remained at First Baptist Church, Arcadia from August 14-September 9. The team fed over 105,000 meals and distributed untold amounts of ice and water. Also responding to the Hurricane Charlie operation were three Chainsaw/Recovery Teams from Mississippi. The Chainsaw/Recovery Teams were from Prentiss Association, Calhoun Association, and Yalobusha Association.

Salvation Army Feeding Unit photoSeptember 16, 2004 — The Feeding Unit was activated in response to Hurricane Ivan. The 16th the Unit moved to Pascagoula, Mississippi at the request of the American Red Cross and MEMA in anticipation of damage. When this area was spared, the truck was moved to Meridian, Mississippi to respond to power outages caused by the storm. About 1500 meals were served September 17-19. On September 20, 2004 a team of Disaster Relief Volunteers was sent to Orange Beach, Alabama, to operate the Salvation Army Feeding Unit. The team was activated September 20-25, 2004 and fed 30,000 meals. Also Chainsaw/Recovery Teams from Calhoun and Yalobusha Associations responded to storm clean-up.

Serving meals after Jeane photoSeptember 27, 2004 — The Feeding Unit was activated to Westside Baptist Church, Fort Pierce, Florida after Hurricane Jeanne. The Unit was on-site in Florida September 27-October 8, 2004. Approximately 16,000 meals were served.

Teams from the Mississippi Baptist Disaster Relief Team served 49 days in Florida.
