Gulfshore Baptist Assembly
Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the central gulf region of the United States on August 29, 2005. As a result of the damage at the
conference center facilities located at Henderson Point near Pass Christian, MS, the normal schedule of events and activities was relocated
to other places and facilities in Mississippi for the 2006 summer season.
Dr. Gene Henderson, 2005 president of the Mississippi Baptist Convention, appointed a nine person study committee to evaluate the
conference ministry needs related to Mississippi Baptists. The committee will present their findings in a report to the Mississippi Baptist
Convention in its annual session.
Individuals and church groups responded to the disaster of Katrina. Specifically, groups came to the facility in Pass Christian to help
clean and clear the grounds and assist in removing debris. Much progress has been made in the cleanup effort. All of the individuals in the
cleanup crews deserve a heart felt thank you for their hard work and dedication to the task. The efforts of these folks were truly a labor
of love for the Lord. Thank you for your willingness to serve and assist Mississippi Baptists.
Seeking to be good stewards of the remaining facilities that withstood the storm, the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board created
warehouse space to store materials and goods related to relief efforts. This space has proven to be very valuable to victims in the area as
well as volunteers who have responded the needs of the people along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
2006 was a different season for conferences as all events were held in alternate facilities and locations across the state. The staff of
the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board conducted fifteen different conferences in various locations. Total attendance was 2000 with fifty
recorded decisions.
The Camps and Assembly Committee of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board has maintained its primary objective to be to lead persons
to a personal confrontation with, and commitment to, Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. We rejoice in the decisions made and are thankful that
even in the midst of the damage and destruction at the conference center that the Gospel message continues to be proclaimed thru efforts of
the convention board.
Note: Gulfshore Baptist Assembly was closed down by the messengers to the 2006 Mississippi Baptist Convention.
