A WMU Treasure

Sixty years ago when the MS WMU was only 69 years old, God used His servant, Miss Edwina Robinson (then Executive-Director of Woman’s Missionary Union of Mississippi) to make Camp Garaywa a reality. Over the years God has continued to bless His ministry at camp. Thousands of souls have been saved; thousand have received a fresh touch from Jesus; and many have received God’s call into full-time Christian service.

Spending time with the Bible photoAll Mississippi Baptists have played a part in reaching people through Camp Garaywa as they have prayed for the ministry there; as they have given of their gifts and time in service there; and as they have given to the Edwina Robinson WMU Special Day Offering and to the Margaret Lackey Offering for State Missions.

To paraphrase Isaiah 34:2, over the years God has enlarged the tent of Garaywa Camp and Conference Center, lengthened the ropes and strengthened the stakes as additional buildings have been added to the original layout in 1947. The more recent buildings have been the Activities Building in 1986 and Patterson Place in 1999.

Garaywa Camp and Conference Center has such a successful ministry today because first and foremost it is God’s camp. Over the past years He has used some of His choice sons and daughters to help make it what it is today. If you look closely out at camp you might be able to see the footprints and fingerprints of Miss Ed, of her mother, Mrs. Prudie Robinson, who was the camp’s first dietitian, and of Marjean Patterson, who hired Fran Pickett as the first Camp Manager. And we should never forget the dedication of people like Harry Douglas, Mrs. Willie Schotte, Miss Nettie Ree Traylor, Ora Johnson, Thelma Thompson, Anna Greenfield, and Bob Dent. They loved what they did and they did it as “unto the Lord.”

Group shot photoThe future lies in the capable hands of Kay Cassibry, Executive Director, Roddy Reed, Camp Manager, and the WMU Executive Board. God has put them here to carry out the task He has had planned from the beginning of time. God is just getting started at Garaywa Camp and Conference Center and THE BEST IS YET TO COME!
