Education Commission

James L. Spencer, M.D., Chairman

It has been a joy and profound privilege to serve on the Education Commission this year with Rickey Blythe, Lee Gardner, Willie E. Greer, Julius Thompson, Robby Johnson, William A. Morehead, Bill Patterson, Gerald Austin, Dan Howard, Wayne McLeod, and Brian Remley. It is the purpose of this Commission to cultivate and strengthen the ties between Mississippi Baptists and our Baptist schools. We sincerely hope that we have succeeded in carrying out this purpose.

Mississippi Baptists are extraordinarily blessed to have Dr. Lee Royce, Dr. Bettye Coward, and Dr. Tommy King serving as our college presidents. Their dedicated and capable leadership is reflected on their campuses in a multiplicity of ways.

As chairman of the Education Commission, I would like to thank our presidents for their unmatched hospitality during our visits to their respective campuses. At each of our meetings, accurate information and records were provided in both a timely and professional manner.

I would also like to thank Dr. Clarence Cooper, President of the Mississippi Baptist Convention, for his presence and participation at each of our meetings. In addition, Dr. Jim Futrals leadership and support proved invaluable as we sought to carry out our responsibilities.

It is the function of the Commission to receive data from each of our colleges. The presidents report on student life, programs, facilities, finances, faculty, campus needs, goals, etc. Without doubt, the highlight of our three meetings is when we hear testimonies from students on each campus. These testimonies remind us of how God is honoring our investment in higher Christian education as we listen to these young adults share the ways in which their school is impacting and inspiring their lives.

Your Education Commission continues to make appeals through the Budget Committee for the addition funding needed at our schools. The Budget Committee, along with messengers to the Convention, has responded positively to these appeals. I thank and praise the Lord for the investment Mississippi Baptists are making in higher Christian education. Only eternity will fully reveal the impact our colleges are making on young peoples lives and the society in which they will serve. Obviously, the need for a Christian education is greater today than it has ever been.

Thank you for your continued involvement and support.
